The Plattduetsche Volkfest Vereen of New York and New Jersey proudly presents the region's longest running continuously held festival celebrating German heritage and the contributions of Germans to the building of the United States. The Masskrugstemmen Competition is sponsored by Hofbräuhaus. The winner will ride on the Hofbräuhaus float in the Steuben Parade and compete in Central Park against winners from HB locations across the US for a trip to Munich. Thousands are expected to attend under sunny skies. The festival will feature Hofbräu Original, Oktoberfest, and Hefe Weizen beers from Hofbräuhaus, imported directly from the brewery in Munich, Germany. Volunteers will serve traditional festival foods from the 'wursts', leberkase, and German regional fish specialties to spectacular potato pancakes and sweet desserts. There will be expanded entertainment and games for children of all ages with a full German marketplace in the Casino, clowns, ice cream and “The Moonwalk” for families. Did anybody say "Schnapps"? Stop by the (appropriately named) "Schnapps Booth" for the tastes of some of the world’s best apple, corn, and herbal shots from Niche. Eisenhower and Herbert Hoover, Congressman Hamilton Fish, Senator Robert F. Wagner, his son Robert Wagner, Mayor of New York City, to such statesmen as Henry Kissinger; as well as men of science, such as John Roebling, Ottmar Mergenthaler, Albert Einstein, Wernher von Braun, and many others, e.g., Levy Strauss. The Parade OrganizationThe continued success of the Parade from the first to the present is due to the dedication and commitment of many individuals and affiliated organizations who are to be commended for their efforts. Over the years the Parade has grown tremendously with the participation of many members from the Germanic-American Community, including singing societies, sports clubs, social and welfare groups, fraternal orders, religious groups, trade unions, folklore and dance groups, carnival societies and many more. In addition, many thousands of participants from German speaking countries and/or areas are attracted to New York for the Parade every year, encouraging the spirit of German-American friendship.
